Every thought is its negation,
Only silence can be free,
A poem writes its own death,
It is helpless in its pursuit.
The poem wishes to be whole,
Wishes to be complete,
And thus, is in the way of its own desire.
The more the poem strives to be a poem,
The further apart it drifts.
A poem always knows it will die,
Yet, those are the conditions of its living.
But a poem is not afraid to die,
Only the poet is,
That is why he writes.
A poem is the ultimate sacrifice,
For it gives up its potential for certainty,
And in doing so,
It gives the poet a chance to know himself.
A poet is nothing without his poem,
Like a river without the earth through which it flows.
A poem is the only child of a poet,
And he mourns its death before he sets out to write.
The poet knows he can never write the last poem,
And with each poem, he is reminded of this.
A poet wants nothing more than the end of his poem,
Because each poem is written out of the desire to be free from poetry.
The death of a poem is the life of the poet,
And so the poet must give up his only love,
So that he may be worthy of his art.
