The Domestic Poem by Vincent S. Coster

The Domestic

Police came with blue

Flashing lights

Trouble in the house on

The corner

She was walking into doors again

A regular habit so it seems

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is from the new collection of poems Eat Not My Brother by Vincent S. Coster which will released later this year. In it this poem the poet looks at the nature of domestic violence from the point of view of a neighbour who looks on as the police arrive to a domestic. The last lines 'She was walking into doors again/ a regular habit so it seems' deals with the fact that all to often the victims continue to cover up for the abuser. Many know when a woman is being a victim of domestic violence. But are often unable to do anything to help them out.
'As the victim of domestic violence in a previous relationship I feel a sadness at the fact that little can be done to help those who are victims. But I feel getting the discussion out there, and arming those victims male and female with the knowledge that it is not okay, that you do not need to put up with it. Dialogue is often the best way. Hopefully this poem will add to the dialogue about domestic violence.'
