The Fallen Runner Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

The Fallen Runner

In the world of competition
There is a sympathetic reaction
For the one who struggles
Never giving up even a fraction

Falling down and getting up
Brushing off and starting again
Regaining strength with a widened stride
Determined to finish in spite of pain

The fallen runner has had a twist of fate
The fans of the favorite are now frowning
Gradually a few cheers multiply and swell
Gaining as the final lap nears… counting

Not in last place any longer…passing two
With the wind pressing against his face
Muscles straining…perspiration streaming
Solidly determined…striving to finish the race

Pounding feet are hammering the torturous track
As though one’s life was hanging in the balance
Blazing with a colossal effort…finishing third
Applause gives merit…he completed the distance
