The Final Sound Poem by The Poet Darkling

The Final Sound

She avoids the elephant in the room
The tension is thick as she packs her things
She leaves behind her broken promises
Right along with their tarnished wedding rings

She can feel his eyes hot upon her back
She closes the suitcase and turns to go
She ignores his pleas for her to stay there
She feels the sting as her tears start to flow

He grabs her arm as she opens the door
Then spins her around to look in her eyes
But what he sees there is no longer love
Just disappointment and lonely goodbyes

There's no more forgiveness to heal the wounds
He's inflicted slowly over the years
There's no more affection to warm her heart
There's no more tenderness to dry her tears

He releases her and she walks away
While resisting the urge to turn around
He opens his mouth and tries to cry out
But his heart breaking is the final sound
