The First—not The Last Poem by Mohammad Younus

The First—not The Last

I am the first—not the last
Before Adam's creation
A breath before the dawn,
Before the stars whispered their names
And the rivers knew their paths.

I am the spark,
The unspoken word
That ripples through the silence,
A pulse before time
Had its say.

I carry the seeds
Of every beginning—
The echo of every thought
Not yet born,
A seed in the soil
Of an endless garden.

But I am not the last.
For the moment I step into being,
I dissolve into the void again,
A thread in the tapestry
That never ends.

I pass,
But I still exist
In a thousand different forms,
A river that flows,
A flame that never extinguishes,
The whisper of something
Yet hidden though manifest.

I am the first,
Nothing precedes me
Not the last—
For I've no ending
I am the beginning,
of every thing
I am not stagnant
I am not in motion
I am just I-Am.
