The Funeral Of My American Hero Poem by Benjamin Hallas

The Funeral Of My American Hero

Your casket
over the hole
in the ground
that is
to be
your final resting place

You looking
so comfortable and
at peace

An American flag
draped
over your casket
like a blanket of snow
on a meadow

I am already
missing you

With tears rolling
down my cheeks

As I think
of all
the good times
we had

How I would
come home
from school
and
you would be
working
in your garden

When you
would come
over for dinner
and we would
talk and
joke around

Over my tears
the priest
is saying
a few words
and prayers

The flag
then folded
and presented
to my grandmother

Like a badge of honor
with its
red and white stripes
and stars
in a field of blue

My grandmother crying
as she accepts
the flag

And people
getting a sense
of how much
she loved him

Then guns boom
like cannons
in honor
of your service
to your country

While the trumpet
sounds taps
and
farewell to thee
