Always aware of it in front of me -
staring me implacably in the face.
Perfectly opaque, it won't let me see
what are the prospects for my life's next phase.
Looming there, like the sword of Damocles,
warning me of the perils of hubris,
sometimes threatening calamities
and sometimes offering a chance of bliss.
Its duration remains unknowable,
I cannot choose what trials it may bring.
A constant fact and unavoidable,
there is one final hope to which I cling -
that the light which terminates this tunnel
is Heaven sent and not the flames of Hell.
