The Future Of Society Poem by jonah gustafson

The Future Of Society

It seems as though these promises leak through my empty skin
A shallow heart’s familiar song sings to show my sin
An honest breath unannounced might break me from my root
But for now, and history, this world I will pollute

A simple mind begs for hate
Neath the throat of those who ate
And in the minds of all who see
The future of society

Depth is found in shallow waves
And faith pursued in selfish ways
The ego of the heart is still
Until it finds a void to fill

But when it has nowhere to go
It searches for a place to show
Why it should mean the world to you
And with light and eyes and strength it grew

Tearing up to the tune of tomorrow
And asking yesterday if I can borrow
The insignificant last remarks
Of someone common, to disembark

To land my soul upon their life
And feel their pain, and feel their strife
With this planet, and with myself
And anger that I’m on fame’s shelf

Either that, or with a sly gesture,
From a quick witted jester
An enemy amongst my friends
Too embarrassed to defend

Unaware of these realities
That clearly show in subtleties
And haunt my life with laughter
And will haunt my life much after

A puzzle piece to this time
Accomplice to the very crime
That I still hear in eerie moans
In every single jaded clone

It seems as though these promises leak through my empty skin
A shallow heart’s familiar song sings to show my sin
An honest breath unannounced might break me from my root
But for now, and history, this world I will pollute

A simple mind begs for hate
Neath the throat of those who ate
And in the minds of all who see
The future of society
