The Getty Poem by Stacey Chan

The Getty

We were on our way to The Getty
You pointed the back screen of the car in front of us
I read. It said - I like it when it is that way and it is like that now
There was no word spoken but we both understood and smiled

We locked our fingers as we walked holding hands
Like the matching pair of gloves, they fitted so well
You said I’ve changed you completely
Of what you believed the real beauty was

We strolled around the beautiful Central Garden
The dancing butterflies reminded me of your Butterflies Dream
It stirred my heart with so much mixed feelings and so many thoughts
I know it wasn’t the warm summer sun that warmed my heart but you

We stood in front of the young maiden and the cupid
She was making weak attempt to refuse his piercing arrow
But he knew, he had won the battle by looking at her eyes
Because amidst the struggles, she wanted it badly at the same time

We witnessed a huge and blurry blind man
He carried a dying young boy who was once his eyes
Around the young boy's left ankle was a poisonous snake
The image taught us love, loyalty and courage to never give up hope

We submerged ourselves in the centuries old paintings and art pieces
Each came with glorious story of the past and the splendid beauty of the subject
You read every detail of each painting with great interest and admired with respect
I never knew we shared this passion until now...
