The Gift Of The Magi Poem by Kuldeep Dongre

The Gift Of The Magi

The Gift Of the Magi

I
The tale that I now begin to tell,
Of a couple, young, in twenty something,
Love it was, in abundance, if anything,
For Della it was Jim, for James she was Dell.

II
Their life was anything but easy,
Odd jobs, dwindling income, meagre,
A tiny dwelling, devoid of any swagger,
Dreams galore, ambitions sky-high and rosy.

III
Two possessions of Youngs held their pride,
For Jim, his ancestral golden watch,
Which he thought upped his fashion quotient a notch,
And Della's long golden hair, that stood out, in her stride.

IV
Expressions of Love taketh many a form to fully blossom,
Physical, platonic, mystical, material, ethereal,
Each new dimension creating a bridge so surreal,
Culminating in an endless journey so pretty and awesome.

V
What better time than Christmas? , sigh,
To shower your beloved with a Magi gift,
Della's thoughts hither thither in a drift,
As she counted her savings en masse, "Oh! My! "

VI
"Not much, not enough to buy a thing", spirits lay wry,
Teary eyed, mind still, heart in disarray,
She surveyed outside to find all gray,
"God, please help me! ", was an imploring cry.

VII
There she stood in front of the mirror,
Gazing at her figure, long curls shining bright,
Her eyes sparkled with joy, a ray of light,
"There comes your gift, Jim, my dear".

VIII
The sudden idea had her spirit lift,
She told an eager hair dresser, seeking permission,
"I have but one prized possession,
For Jim, I shall lose it, be swift".

IX
She sprang to her feet, ransacked the store,
In search of a perfect one for Jim,
Platinum chain it was seemed destined only to him,
Fist pump, worn leather strap no more, a joyful roar.

X
Back home from the exploits seemingly hazed,
What if, Jim looks at me enraged and upset,
I shall beg for his forgiveness for it's a regainable asset,
Thought she braving to appear unfazed.

XI
Jim returned home Christmas eve that night,
His face turning pale when he looked at his wife,
For the golden cherish had met the edge of a knife,
He stood still feeling miserable at that sight.

XII
Della, held him close, showered her affection,
"Jim darling, see what I've got for you", she exclaimed,
Declaring proudly, "my hair is all it claimed",
As she flashed the chain anxious for his reaction.

XIII
Jim, overwhelmed, stepped aside,
Placed a package on the table,
Della, unwrapped, fingers in a slight tremble,
She saw before her a set of combs lay reside.

XIV
Della held them close to her heart,
She had yearned for them in a while,
"Jim, my hair grows very fast, please smile! ",
Jeweled rims, tortoise shell, a fine piece of art.

XV
"Sorry Love, watch is what I sold, ", he uttered,
"For I had no other way to buy you a present",
"You will always be my girl, there is no resent",
Mental trauma coupled with the cold he thus shuddered.

XVI
A tight hug consoling one another stitched by a kiss,
A silent lullaby, with heads rested on shoulder,
Mutual warmth, it helped, as the night grew colder,
Little pains still persist, but life is still a bliss.

XVII
A burning desire to see your loved happy, so intense,
A sense of inner calm, the tranquil,
Infinite peace so serene should the joy prevail,
The journey is beautiful, satisfaction, immense.
