The Girl In The Corner Poem by Shelby Lanier

The Girl In The Corner

Rating: 4.5

She sits
She waits
No sound
Not a trace

She says nothing
And doesn't move
Just sits
With nothing yet to prove

Of who she is
Or why she is there
She just
Sits and stares

You see her
At the corner of your eye
You stop...
Then you sigh

SILENCE

You stare at her
And then you heart starts to pound
A thousand beats per second
Because... she's bound

Bound to a heart
That was shattered
And the pieces...
They are scattered

They are all over the floor
Right in front of you
So you bend over to reach
But... then... they turn blue

You wander why this is
So you look at her face
And there is the answer
The thought you want to erase

The horror that you see
In her saddness you see..
Her brokeness and...
All that has to be

Tears roll down her face
Because the truth is now free
Out in the open for everyone to see

You walk right to her
And hold out you hand
She begins to give a smile,
That which no one will understand

Except you! ...
For it is the same one
From long ago... and you
Wish now that it was all done

Because your the reason
Her heart is shatterd
All over the floor... and you
Didn't make her feel mattered

You tore apart
How could you forget
You selfish fool
And now you'll regret

She suddenly frowns and
Stands up... tall
And walks towards you
And pushes you to the wall

She says 'why'
And then loosens her grip
And you take hold of her hand
Before she makes a rip

She steps back
She shakes her head no
Then pulls off her mask
And is ready to show...

Her true self
Who she is deep inside
And lets down her wall
That has been up all this time

She pauses...
And doesn't move
For the girl is I
And there's nothing left to prove

I am the girl
That was hidden
Behind the world
And everything in it

And afraid
That you would reject
This someone
Who you soon were to forget

Scared to be discovered
Or to be found from within
To show her true self
Or let anyone in

Because I
Have a deeper fear
That one day I'll be alone
And soon disappear!

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

I gave this my normal high grade of nine because it should not only be read, but I think there was enough put in to this piece to reval some greater truths that young people ought to know and remember. It is prose, of course, but it has quality for all who would read it. GW62
