The Gossips Poem by Precious Mlambo

The Gossips

I greeted my neighbour in the morning "Hi! "
Never did I know that that was the day she would die
See, I had greeted her many times before
And sometimes even knocked on her door
We talked about the latest gossip and our views
I didn't understand just how much she would lose;
So I never shared with her the Good news

We would sit and drink some tea
I would tell her what was going on with me
Then we would laugh at silly jokes
And gossip about all my church folks
We talked about the latest gossip and our views
I didn't understand just how much she would lose
So I never shared with her the Good news

I even had many stories to tell about my pastor
And that was so much fun that time seemed to travel faster
Especially when we talked about how much he just wanted our money
Oh! I tell you, my friend found that part really funny
We talked about the latest gossip and our views
I didn't understand just how much she would lose
So I never shared with her the Good news

What is funny is that she never once came to church with me
Because she could see through me that church was so unnecessary
Until the afternoon her son came over and said
"Your bosom friend is dead"
....

In all my times with her we talked and talked
But she never saw Jesus in how I walked
Until at her funeral the pastor talked about heaven and hell
He told the Good news that I never cared to tell
You see, I knew the Good news
That Jesus came for her soul to save
I kept it a secret because it sounded so lame
I kept it a secret until her grave
I let my bosom friend die in her shame

I could have shared with her a verse or two
But I cared not to
It seemed easier to not say a word
And pretend that I too had never heard
-The Good news
It seemed better to be silent than to look like a fool
And sound so uncool
So we talked about the latest gossip and our views
I just didn't understand then how much she would lose
-Her soul and eternal life

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem tells the story of two friends: one is born again (saved) and the other is not. They meet everyday and gossip about church folks and the pastor. The one who is saved never shares the Gospel with her unsaved friend, until the unsaved friend dies. She is recalling how she never led her friend to Christ, but she let her die in her shame...
