The Government We Elect Poem by Francis Duggan

The Government We Elect

The Government we vote into office on election day
About us as a people surely more does say
Than newspaper columnist or any critic can
Though majority rule cannot speak for every woman, child or man.

Does your Government believe on a fair go for all
Or believe that for one to rise another must fall
And see the gap in living standards as okay
The Government we elect we deserve as some are known to say.

And how does your Government treat refugees
Poor boat people from war torn and drought ravaged Lands Overseas
Do they make their efforts for a better and a safer life seem a waste of time
By locking them in jail as if they are guilty of a serious crime.

The Government we elect it does seem to me
Tells what sort we are though with that you may not agree
When we voted for them I am sure we did know
That for all they did or did not believe on a fair go.
