The Hatchling Poem by Dan McGonagle

The Hatchling

Rating: 5.0

Deep in the heart of a cavern
By the side of a fiery lake
A dragon kept watch on its precious egg
Waiting as long as its hatching might take

A hundred years had passed and more
Yet the beast had never once moved
As if set in stone for eternity
Her skin all scaly and grooved

Her eyes were fixed with an intense stare
As the egg began to glow and flare
A dull pale pink at first...then to a brilliant fiery red
A crack appeared in the burning shell...followed by a tiny dragons head

The mythical beast gave out a roar as her wondrous body shook free
Protecting her babe with enormous wings as tender as could be
The love of a mother cant be denied as anyone will tell
She took the babe in her massive mouth keeping it safe and well

Leaving behind the barren earth she rose high into the air
Flying far above the clouds she made for the dragons lair
Landing on a grassy slope she let her baby out
To frolic with others of her kind and play without a doubt

These creatures that are born of dreams and fly above the sky
Their lives go on eternally for they can never die
Their story lives in the heart of Man from ages long since past
When they were known as devils...now the truth is out at last
