The Heartless Poem by Lone Dog

The Heartless

When you look at the people among us,
It's clear life's not always fair,
For some are burdened with defects
Making life much harder to bear.

There are some who are born with cleft palates,
And those who are born to be gay.
There are the deaf, the blind, the retarded;
They can't help it. God made them that way.

Our species seems prone to such defects,
But one defect's quite different from most;
It involves an organ that's missing
Yet required by its human host.

This defect's becoming more common,
And it sets our own species apart;
For some human beings among us
Are living without any heart.
