The Kindness Of Class Mates Poem by Bill Grace

The Kindness Of Class Mates

I remember the class mates
Who did not make fun
Of a natural target
Who had yet to learn
The art of camouflage
The art of blending into the herd.

Bill Crowe did not make fun
nor did he encourage
those who would slay
a peer for the entertainment
of seeing invisible blood flow.
Pete Waldron and a student senate helped me win.

My forgotten undergraduate professor said
The adult version of this well
Reflecting on days in the big time he commented:
'There are those who would kill you
Just to keep their claws sharp.'
It is something I remember to this day.

The last line, has some real truth in it.
