The Last Post Poem by Rose Blakeley

The Last Post

Softly falls the autumn leaf,
Then silently it lies with a sigh of relief;
On the stone of the Cenotaph it rests now, quite still,
As with the beauty of Elgar the air it does fill.

Once more the regiments of remembrance align,
Their coats multi-medalled, striking and fine
And proud are their faces, although frozen with pain,
United by a bond, strong, never to wane.

All minds are lost, for minutes one, two,
And the faces of the fallen do come into view,
Heroes of war, their lives for us down they laid-
An ultimate sacrifice, our tomorrows never will fade.

Softly still falls the autumn leaf,
But for spring’s new arrival, it does have belief,
Whilst forward we march until our land’s pure with peace
And for all those we honour the suffering will cease...

Beyond the horizon before an eternal dawn,
There’s a place void of pain, where new life is born
And the Last Post does echo as each weary soldier is found,
Whilst scarlet, silk petals do carpet the ground.
