The Last Road Poem by Erika Wingo

The Last Road

Looking down the last road
That I will ever travel
I wonder what lies at its end
Will it be lonely without life
As I now know it?
Will I ever laugh again?

Does the soul die
Once the light fades
From the eyes
Does the darkness last forever
Once the river's run dry?
Sadness in its most extreme form
Captures you in a fragile glass jar
And when you look back,
The world is so far...
Away

When the distance of all eternity
Engulfs me,
When my heart has grown
Still and cold
Then will you know me
And all the secrets I never told
Someday won't we all cease to exist
The way we exist today?
Looking down the last road,
Suddenly fiercely aching
To stay
