The Lesson Poem by Ruben Tover

The Lesson

Two A.M. her house would always be, quite and dark.
She'd leave the door unlocked, the dog wouldn't bark.
We were young minded friends searching each other's heart.
To someone else, our love was promised not to part.

Adventure, ego, lust, my head would be blinking.
My other in control, doing all my thinking,
You feel me I can't let go, I feel you I can't say no.

A hard life to live, when you give for two.
"Cling, Cling, Shing…….Cling………..!
"QUITE"! ......Wait a minute……his keys!
"The front door, oh my God, he's home!

"Jump in the closet! ", she nervously said.
"No, No, No not under the bed! "
As I held my garb, kneeling like a fool.
I held my knocking knees, shaking like a boy in school.

I prayed, "Please God don't be too cruel."
As she whisked him away with a clinical excuse.
Guilt filled my mind what terrible abuse.

His suspicions blossomed as left the front door.
I slipped on my jeans, I eased out the back,
I kissed her goodnight; I'll do this no more.

Hopped over the fence, I seen his red light.
Ran for my car, I parked out of sight.
I laughed with relief as I wiped my sweat brow.
I reminded myself and how, of my vow!

I inserted the key, pressed down the lock,
As I dressed, I realized I was missing a sock.
