The Life And Death Of The Mahatma Poem by Dr John Celes

The Life And Death Of The Mahatma

Born in Porbandar, Gandhi,
A Hindu London-trained barrister,
Broke the back-bone of British rule in India.

He worked in South Africa,
And found his twin weapons of Sathyagraha –
A non-violent means of protesting
And civil-disobedience,
And Ahimsa or Non-violence,
Which finally won for India,
Its precious freedom, Sawaraj-
Self-governance.

Shot dead by Godse point-blank,
The man fell dead at once,
Assassinated by an angry
discontented, distraught
fellow Hindu-man!

But,
The Mahatma lives forever
in the minds and hearts
of all Indians world-over,
as the Freedom-fighter leader
par excellence who became
The Father of Free India, Bharat.
