The Long Ride Home Poem by Bryan Corbett

The Long Ride Home

you're out on the town
with you're significant other
having a few drinks,
and then you order that one
drink that sends you
over the tipping point
and you say something
that you most definitely
should NOT have said

and

everybody in the entire room
heard you say it
because, wouldn't you just know it
those words fell out of your mouth
at the exact moment
the band decided to take a break

that, my friend,
is going to be one very long ride home for you
it could be an eerily quiet ride
or a painfully loud ride
you might be dodging some punches
while trying to drive the car
she may even try to exit the vehicle
at some point
just to prove her point

yes, my friend, a very long ride, indeed
then only to sleep with one eye open
and don't think it's over the next morning, either
even if she is eerily quiet again
because I promise you
that in about four days
after you have finally forgotten about it
and you've finally dropped your guard
that's the moment the frying pan will,
more than likely, come sailing through the living room

yes, my friend, a very long ride, indeed
it was nice seeing you, though
we really should get together more often
