The Longest Night Poem by Paul Daniel

The Longest Night

Phone rings, police on the line.
Theres been an accident, no she's not fine
I felt, no words to describe
It's 50/50, whether she'll survive

Shocked and confused, I honestly tried
But so much guilt cos I just couldn't cry
I sat there thinking of all our happy times
Not a single bad thought goes through my mind

Then a doctor appears all dressed in white
Says she probably wont get through the night
I walk in the room and sit by her side
Whisper in her ear and tell her to fight

I tell her she better not leave me tonight
Cos im not ready to make it alone in this life
I bring in our son and he holds my hand tight
He cant see her face because the bed is too high

I looks at me calm and asks if he should say goodbye?
Finnaly that tear appears in my eye
A split second decision on whether to lie
And tell him that mummies going to be alright
But before I can answer he points up at the light
And says 'is mummy going to that place in the sky? '
No man should ever have to endure that sight

Then that infamous sound as she starts to flatline
As I shout at the boy 'go and wait outside! '
I run through ward, grab the first nurse I find
I tell her to hurry, as she's falling behind

Sat in silence the hours drift by
Then the doctor comes back and says he needs me to sign
There's nothing he can do, his hands are tied
They're pulling the plug and she's going to die

Get home and search all the usual places he hides
Suddenly it hits me and I finally realise
The impact this will have on someone half my size

I hold him, I hug him, I say 'be strong for me mike'
He wipes a tear from my cheek and says
'I'll try daddy. I'll try'.
