The Man From Silverwater Poem by Jonathan Drane

The Man From Silverwater

Homebush Bay the market place
A coffee shop an aged face
A man came up to meet me once
He wasn’t from my time

A pawn shop and an old straw bale
A metal top a coffee tale
We sat amongst the brimming crowd
He held my gazing eye

A flower truck a girl walks by
A pause and then an ancient sigh
He started with a story then
Of when he once was young

A wedding day a golden girl
A wedding night a love unfurls
The highway called him back again
And then he left her side

A ribbon line, a highway road
A calling from the trucking load
And then he took the money back
And held it out to her

A girl becomes a distant time
A tear is falling to a sign
He holds his heart out to us all
And cries until he smiles

Memory, a life gone by
A time alone a time inside
But she is with him all the while
And til his heart is still

A look inside his darkened eye
A mind in motion distant sigh
He was once a truckie then
And driving in the night

A truck in motion, hill in sight
A mother girl, the black, black ice
Is calling him to fall and fall
Along the bending road

A twisted wreck, a load in flight
A mind in spinning endless light
A copper asks well how is this
And feel my pistol butt

Danny boy is with us now
His hand is falling to a round
His mind is on the table top
And he is in our awe

Coffee calls us with a scent
Endless pools and highway bent
The road is back and she is gone
Away back in the home
