The Mask Poem by Cat Windham

The Mask

Behind this laughing smile and these happy eyes
Dwells another person who creates the lies
Behind this energy and the constant want to help
Lies a Miserable person, no more than a whelp
Behind this child, so young, innocent, and carefree
There is a tormented soul who is the true me
Behind this mask of happiness that is so plain
I wear only more masks of horror and pain
Behind this woman that comforts fears
Is a child that cries blood red tears
Behind this flawless mask where none can see
Although happy I seem, am tortured for eternity
Behind the laughs I have uttered, none that are mine
The only sound is when the mask breaks and I freely cry
Many I have gone to trying to be saved
But all of them in the end have turned me away
Never again shall I dare utter a word of death
Because never again shall I have a true friend
Nor never again shall I try to find love
Never again will I wish to go to heaven above
Never again will I take my mask off to see
And never again will I let anyone know the true me
