The Mermaid Poem by Pearl L Johns

The Mermaid

I am a creature of the sea.
I frolic with the dolphins and the seahorses.
They are my companions.

I secretly watch the families bring their
little children to splash in the water.
Their laughter singing in the air.

What must it be like to walk on the land?
To feel sand between toes
and sunshine on my face?

I see this human male,
How amazing his body appears to me.
I dream of him at night curled up in my seaweed bed.

He lays upon the beach.
Restless, with moody eyes
That seem to search for something just out of his sight.

I watch him as he becomes sleepy there
on the beach, taken to a dreamland
place of fantasy.

He lays so close to the edge of the sea.
I am tempted to reach out and touch him
to see if he feels as warm and strong as he looks.

My courage deserts me.
I pull back my arm and return to the sea
where I will curl up into the arms of a fantasy.

I will return to my lonely
bed of seaweed
and dream.
