The Message - Poem by Barry Conway

THE MESSAGE

I FELT HIM APPROACH ME FROM BEHIND,
I KNEW HE HAD SOMETHING FOR ME,
IN TURNING I SAW HE HELD,
A FADED YELLOWISH NOTE IN HIS HAND.

I PEERED AT IT,
BUT THERE WAS NOTHING WRITTEN UPON THE PAGE.
"LOOK CLOSER HE BECKONED! "
THUS WHEN I THE CLOSER LOOKED,
SAW A SCRIPT APPEAR UPON IT.
PUZZLED THOUGH I BE,
AS THE SCRIPT WAS UNINTELLIGIBLE.
HE SAW MY STUNTED LOOK,
"LOOK CLOSER! " STILL HE BECKONED,
"LOOK DEEPER, LOOK LONGER! "

MY DEEPENING UNFOLDED GREATER CLARITY,
THE SCRIPT BEGAN TO TAKE FORM,
TO FORM WORDS,
AT FIRST RANDOMLY WITHOUT PATTERN,
THEN TURNED UPON THEMSELVES,
IN A WHIRLPOOL OF CREATION,
WHEREUPON WITHOUT HESITATION,
THEY WERE STILL.

"STILL DEEPER! " HE AGAIN BECKONED,
SO I DEEPENED FURTHER,
AND IN THAT DEPTH I WAS ALL AT ONCE
UPON THE PAGE,
PART OF THE MESSAGE,
PEERING UP TO MY MESSENGER,
FOR I HAD BECOME THE MESSAGE.
