The Mistress! Poem by Bolami lawal

The Mistress!

It pains the mistress to be a decoy,
but she is baited by greed
and blinded with vanity;
she is enraged at her lot,
against her fate
that locked her out.

It pains the mistress to sleep alone,
her only comfort; a cozy bed,
an empty mattress where she snuggled at night,
and the day soon will break
when she flaunts her fancy ride;
still,
the night cometh quickly
when she lay with her mischief;
arms round the pillow,
eyes on the clock;
her only prayer is for crisis at the other end.

It pains the mistress to be second-guessed,
i know of one right across my flat;
beneath her glamourous visage
lies a loner,
her bitterness and fears, an open secret;
her guilt and pride held her bound for the ruin;
in one hand she bears her pain,
with the other she buried her shame,
and with each season,
the mistress stales....
