The M.V.Barima Tragedy. Poem by cheryl winter

The M.V.Barima Tragedy.

Such terror! Such horror!
Such anguish! Such trauma!
Such sorrow! Such misery!
Pervading Guyana, our beloved country!
Fathers, mothers, grandparents, children,
All trapped in the tragic dilemma,
Which unfolded on the M.V, Barima!
The aged vessel faltered in the raging water,
Cracked and gave up under overwhelming pressure!
Then sank and settled,
At the bottom of the muddy river!
Some have been rescued!
Some corpses have been recovered and buried!
But many are still missing!
And may never again be seen!
We can never forget that such distress did prevail,
As we remember, we will weep and wail!
But we must now turn to God Almighty,
For it is only He,
Who can comfort us and give us strength daily,
To carry on without our beloved who passed away!
May God have mercy on those who are alive!
And may He grant peace and rest
To those who did not survive!
