The Name Above All Others Poem by Denis Martindale

The Name Above All Others

Above the Saviour's cross, I saw
A message plain to see,
That shared His Name and so much more
Right there on Calvary.
Declaring Jesus as a king
Who came from Nazareth,
This man of whom God's angels sing,
Remembering His death.

God had a plan beyond the cross
And this the Saviour knew,
By faith, He suffered shame and loss
For both Gentile and Jew.
And for the ones who wished Him dead,
He interceded there,
They know not what they do! He said,
Still showing love in prayer.

No angels came to save the day,
Since none of these got sent,
The Father kept them all at bay,
Forgiveness to present.
Christ knew His Kingdom would arise,
And one thief trusted, too,
That thief had wisdom that proved wise
As would the chosen few.

Each Easter comes, each Easter goes,
Though sorrows each one brings,
Yet through God's grace, this world now knows
Of Jesus, King of Kings!

Denis Martindale. May 2022.

I wrote this after seeing a cross on a necklace
that had the name of Jesus engraved on it and
that reminded me of the sign above the cross
of Christ telling the people about our Saviour:

Jesus of Nazareth. King of the Jews.
