The Name We Carry Poem by *Tony Cemaluk Egbuonu

The Name We Carry

We do not build for the day.
We build for the decade.
We do not plant for ourselves.
We plant for those who will sit in our shade.

The furnace cools,
but the metal remembers the shape.
The hands go home,
but the mounds remain.

Let our sweat be silent curriculum.
Let our sacrifice be unseen syllabus.
Let every graduate, every breakthrough, every name
be a footnote
