The Night That Santa Cried Poem by Lone Dog

The Night That Santa Cried

`Twas the night before Christmas
And all were asleep.
Except for Dad's snoring
There wasn't a peep.

Then, up on our rooftop,
The jingle of bells
Signaled Santa's arrival
And a gift-filled Noel.

With a sack full of presents,
Quick as a flash
Santa slid down the chimney
In a cloud of grey ash.

But, as Santa was emptying
The gifts from his sack,
He was struck by a thought that
Quick took him aback.

He seemed startled and shaken
And he slumped in a chair
As this new revelation
Caused growing despair.

And the longer he thought, the
More distraught he became,
`Till his eyes welled with tears. Then,
He sadly exclaimed:

'I've taught by example
To give not to get,
But I see that the children
Don't get it as yet.

All my giving has failed to
Teach children what's right,
For there's ne'er been one gift left
For me Christmas night.'

*I believe that parents need to do more to teach their children to be givers and not just takers. Perhaps, at Christmas, children could be encouraged to choose one of their favorite used toys at Christmas time and give it to a poor child or to a charity catering to the poor.
