The Only Sign - Poem by Kitty Marie Lucas

sometimes trying isn't hard enough,
i've sacrificed the best parts of myself.
i... find what motivates me is avoidance
of your reminders that you
won't be just as well.

the screaming that keeps
me awake at night
also the only sign
that says i'm still alive
your unwavering dedication
to your cause
distracting from the emptiness
that will be the cost...

sometimes your theories need a place to go.
why not me? you know my faults all by name.
i thought if i tried to earn your love,
you'd see you've only
had yourself to blame.

the screaming that keeps
me awake at night
also the only sign
that says i'm still alive
your unwavering dedication
to your cause
distracting from the emptiness
that will be the cost...
you know as well as i do
there's still a little truth in you...
but this lie's
not worth it
for you

you said... i should let the feelings go,
but you say i'm cold now... why should i try?
then something in my head
says i learned from the best
so the fault's not mine,
the fault's not mine

sometimes 'pretty' isn't smart enough...
i see too deep to let it go.

the screaming that keeps
me awake at night
also the only sign
that says i'm still alive
your unwavering dedication
to your cause
distracting from the loneliness
that will be the cost...

it takes a little effort
to hold on
you're not the only one
that's so far gone...
you know as well as i do
the only thing i feel now is hate for you...
so if you go
then i will
too...
so if you go
then i will
too

...this life's
not worth it
for you
