The Opium Thriller - Poem by Nicole D'Settemi

Cross your heart
And hope-to-die
Stick a needle…
But, certainly not through-the-eye!

In the mainline-
Is more LIKE IT
And, now I hope-to-die
Because, I can no longer seem to fight it

No, I cannot fight it,
I cannot break free
And, now I know that I
Just simply will not BE-

That ‘So Sweet Story'
That effortless tale
Of a girl, in her life who
Should have prevailed.

Yet, it didn't turn out
Quite as she thought
Oh no, it didn't.
Yet-she fought and she fought!

To try to break free
To try to succeed
To get out of there
And, to try and to be:

Somebody else-
A different fate
Sombody wise-
That she just wouldn't hate.

So she kept on the fight
Yes, she continued the battle
Until her mind it kept SCREAMING
It shook and it rattled!

Spinning in circles
It caused so much pain
Frustration and tears
Until she wasn't the same

She started to change
She changed into a beast
One that just wanted
To live off a feast;

A feast of these drugs
The Dinner's Delight
The Opium Plate
The meal of the night!

So, she ate every bit.
Yes, she swallowed it whole.
Yes, she ate every bit.
Until she was full.

She gulped, and she swallowed!
She stuffed herself-sick
She continued to eat
As her fingers she licked

Every last crumb
So sweet-the taste!
Not one single drop-
Did she let go to waste!

The taste was so grand
That the price that she'd pay
Was more expensive than anything
Yet, she continued that day.

She ate and she ate
She continued to dine
She loved the dry taste
Yes, this drug was her wine

When she was finished
She lifted her head
And, she gave off this look;
That truly it said:

She knew she was finished,
She knew she now led-
To a path now that she
Knew-made her better off dead!

And, now she did realize
Yes, know she could see
That the Plate of the Opium
Yes, the plate was the key

This feast surely would be-
Would be the killer
Because, the feast was the weapon-
In this Opium Thriller!
