The Poet And The Tyrant Poem by Ediney Santana

The Poet And The Tyrant

What can a poet do
against a firing squad?
There is no time tofear death.
Neither the people, nor the tyrant
knew the meaning in his verses,
but the tyrant's counselors
insisted, "shoot the poet, he wants to give
your lands, gold and bread to the people".
The tyrant who feared
even what did not exist, ordered:
- Shoot the poet! Burn his poems,
cut off his body
and feed the animals.
Dead poet, happy counselors and tyrant.
What they didn't know is: you can kill a poet,
never his poetry.
