The Poet in the River's Depths
By William He
The sleeper in the river's depths,
He is drifting away,
Whence shall he return?
I behold the withered verses,
The fisherman's shadow in the ripples,
Answering the startled strings with a hushed reply.
I wrappe in a mantle of pensive shade,
Softly breathed my question,
Why are you blended with an ethereal soul?
Midnight dragon boats—a muffled thud,
A solitary light, mugwort leaves veiling the face.
The collapse into madness,
Phoenix sleeves, fawning, offer sycophantic joy,
Leaving only me—solitary,
To duel the Golden Throne.
Skimming the watery edge,
Where Chu-land silk spins a five-colored web,
Binding the rivers and mountains fast.
The heart hangs suspended.
Returning once more to the phantom homestead,
There, roasted goose legs fortify the primordial soul.
Plum rains wither the azure jade pendants,
Pomegranates blossom, half-fallen by the riverbank.
