The Present Poem by Hailey Agnew

The Present

He told me he loved me.
He told me he wanted me.
He told me together we would forever be.
I didn't believe.

I didn't see,
for I was blind,
what was there,
before my eyes.

He stood there,
holding the door for me.
Waiting for me to come around,
patient as can be.

But I still didn't love him.
I was still dwelling,
on a previous love,
over and done with.

Could it be,
I lost a diamond,
searching for stones,
in the wrong beach?

Could it be,
he was there all along,
ready to catch me when I fell,
waiting for me to get in tune with the song?

Could he have really waited that long,
for me to catch up to this page,
this chapter in life,
the chapter of today?

I lived in the past once,
but now I live in the moment.
Because every day is a gift,
that's why they call it the present.
