The Proud
Early in the morning
In my car, driving,
Had to pull to the side,
Used brakes and stopped.
In a full amazement
Sat and watched,
Motionless!
Firm-bodied, was great,
Greater her movements.
Colorful in all shades
Of brown, I observed,
Coyote walking by.
Was not shy, nor shameless,
Looked around, confident,
Was brave and doubtless.
Said no word, I heard her:
'Here is ours, has been! '
How I wish I could be,
Proud with self-belief.
At night read the news:
'Coyote is laid down! '
Shrieked in my skin,
Closed eyes, imagined,
Juxtaposed read and seen.
Portraited a painting,
Early Sun and breeze,
Proud, she was free!
But on the other wall
Sat a poster, the gun,
In silence, it did talk:
'Killer in cold blood! '
