The Proud Prince! Poem by Denis Martindale

The Proud Prince!

A haughty Prince once told a crowd
Of gifts to God above,
Yet were his gifts considered proud
Or given through his love?
That night, the young Prince had a dream,
As if God called his name.
To him, who thought his gifts supreme,
And thus, no sins to blame.

The Lord explained that He gave, too.
His warm and cosy bed,
His Palace, anyone could view,
And hair upon his head.
His eyes to see, his ears to hear,
His nose and mouth to breathe,
His parents, whom he loved most dear,
So much, how could he leave?

A fast white horse he loved to ride,
A wondrous dog as well,
A treasure chest of gold to hide,
Of which he should not tell.
A cute young maiden whom he kissed
At every chance he got.
So precious, he could not resist
As she loved him a lot!

There was sweet water, and sweet wine,
And fish and meat to spare,
And peacocks, too, that looked so fine
In gardens here and there.
A sun and moon, and stars above,
As heralds day and night,
But God saw these as not enough
In granting him delight.

The Lord sent Jesus from His Throne!
God said, 'He died for you,
For every sin Christ must atone,
Including those you do! '
The Prince awoke and loved the Lord
More than the gifts he gave.
How could God's love then stay ignored?
Thank God, Christ died to save!

The Prince then knelt in humble prayer!
'Let Jesus be my guide!
Reminding me I must take care,
Preventing me from pride! '
Yes! On that very happy day,
The Prince believed in Christ
And proved his faith was here to stay!
The day he got baptised!
