The Rain Falling On The Stairway

By LIU-Yong Translated by East Sea Fairy

In the out-of-the-way hostel,
I wake up midnight, and find the rain falling on the stairway,
So sad I'm in a gloomy mood that I can't describe and tell.
Autumn is drawing to its last day.
The crickets screech in distress and dismay.
The night candle burns out late,
The snuffs of it quickly burns off the last ray.
For no reason at all the hours of darkness I always dissipate
by sleeping a sleep without a bedmate.

She would find me faulty
for after we bade each other farewell
I haven't written her and broke the promise easily
I still remember well
that she gave me a thread of hair and vowed that she would be my forever belle.
If we can reunite, I will lodge in the backroom of the brothel straight
to accompany her in her cell,
and write new lyrics over sweet wine. Into order to see her sweet smiles great,
I would like to blow all my loot and lolly at any rate.
