The River Rises Poem by Steve Wheeler

The River Rises

Catch the current as the waters flow
the flood gates open as the levels grow
it's just the start for all we know
and the river rises

While storm clouds gather in the skies
the hills are weeping as my cold heart dies
My world is drowning and it's no surprise
that the river rises

My heart, just like a wounded doe
is draining slowly of its life blood flow
My time has come and I must go
as the river rises

And as the river reaches further still
to inundate a world that drank its fill
I watch from high upon my island hill
while the river rises
