The Sidecar Ride Poem by Mariam de Haan

The Sidecar Ride

The tyres kiss the tarmac
Pushing us forward
Past the trees and bushes
Past the men and women

Steal into a life
A man cleans his roof
Children go to Sunday prayers
All watching as we rush by

Be amazed as I go by
Something new, different
A motorbike but more
It's little baby setlles beside it

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My dad made a sidecar for his motorbike a couple of years back. Sidecars are really new in Tanzania. I wanted to show the feeling of confusion that the people get when they see it. At the same time I wanted to show something that I always feel when I am in a motorcycle or car. That you can see a snippet of people's lives. I often wonder of and think about their story and who they are. It's a weird feeling that I can't really explain.
