The Somme Poem by Gerard Woods

The Somme

The Somme
To France they were sent
Marching in two by two they went
With smiles on their faces they went
With shouldered rifles they went
With new uniforms and boots they went
With laughter in the ranks they went
To the Somme they were sent
To fight they were sent
To their deaths they went, they went, to their deaths they were sent
They were sent, they were sent.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I had seen on TV the newsreel of soldiers in France making there way
to the Somme and how young they were, too young to die but thousands did, they laughing, joking not knowing what was to come
