The Sows Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

The Sows

1-the sows cried to-night
Rarely they stopped till
Dawn blessed with her light
The subject Earth
2-the sows cried to-night
Till they were hoarse
By Dawn.
The whistling sea-waters
Then
Drowned in their rustling
The last cries of the sows
Immediate
3-object and reason; term
And sentence; sentence and
Syllogism
The brain is thickening
Dark.
The waters deride the beauties
Of the dusk.
The waters due for punishment by
Night
4-‘today the night comes
Fast'
‘how do you get that? ' asked
The erect Poet Seer
‘Dusk told me'
‘You speak to the dusk? '-
Poet Seer erect.
‘With eyes'
‘then tell the dusk I
Desire it'
‘you want to salute it? '
‘Yes'
5-between dark thought and
The graves and the tombs
In the twilight fading
The tombs fade not
But
Grow
In the early dusk
And
Move in the lights
Of rising night.
Fates and ghosts
Together wake
Before the night
The shrouds come later
In the march
With flambeaux royal
Chanting hoarse
And rattling.
Deep thoughts they
Chanted.
In the grave during
The day
For thinking they
Had time.
They had time
For thinking.
Out! Out!
The winds be cool-inviting.
Out! Out!
6-Of the day
What difference?
The fields are flooded
With soaked roots
He said of fields of poppies
One on one
One after the other
Glowed
And it was dusk:
Then
Sudden the glowing
Curve
Nose-dived at once
So sudden it was!
The cool winds
Stopped
And said
‘this must not be'
‘rest if you will not
Play'
So said the bent
Poppies
Yes, so said.
And
It was dusk
And
Twilight
Thereafter it was
Night
But
The marches of the
Night
Began late
In deep of
Night
By midnight candles
Wavering in winds
That brought the scent
Of yews and firs:
The march had started from
The street
Nearest to the gates of
Cemetery:
Then
Upwards proceeding.
Each torch shone
As united to the
Other torch
And torches
United
As in one
In night
From tree to tree
No human eyes looked
For
They knew
They of the march
Where to pass
And when too.
For
Wisdom had grown
Beyond the human
Here it lay
Deciding directions
Right
Without the need
Of tragedies and
Ways
From which to learn
Then
To be wise that way:
Here
The drone of somber
Stay
Made wave of wisdom
After
Wave of wisdom.
Together
They combined and
Brilliantly.
A White Goat
Was there
Horns on head
And diadem around
With jewels bursting
Orient.
It was crude yet
Impressive.
7-seraph of the troubled
Skies
There's water gathering for
Rain
There's electricity gathering for
Currents
And
Currents gathering for thunder
Another brilliant Dawn
To fade and go
Earth, tricky Earth moves clinical
And so
The woods are rotten but
They started moving at
Coming of the Dawn
And
Glowing
8-the ram
Caught in the frail and
Withering bushes
If it had stopped
Just stopped
To think and
Extricate itself slowly
It would have liberated
Itself intelligently:
Earth moves clinical, often,
Often.
You have to move with Earth.
But
The ram hurried; so often
We be so and
We do so.
9-the waters of the light
What light?
It was dark night
Yet silver shone the
Moon-rays on the main
Even
Beneath the bridges.
I saw a figure tied by
Chains
To yet another figure
Then
Startled
I found there was a
Queue
So long so distant
That in the distance
Faded:
All with chains tied and
Moving slow
And silent
10-brave we recent been
Through suffering
The gates, the white gates
For us opened with
an angel waiting:
the night-dews on their feet
rushed through
as waters
through a dam that's leaking:
how much of suffering:
suffering of here, suffering
of there:
there's distantraising
of a water arch giant and
trembling
that's life's equivalent
beginning.
11-they were a-reading of
The paper in the sitting
Room:
Yet would not read
For
Thoughts came a-flowing
That
Was the sub-conscious we
Have been through all these
Wreaths of verses.
