The Spectacular Spider's Web! Poem by Denis Martindale

The Spectacular Spider's Web!

Today, the 2nd of July 2026,
I stood again at my front door,
Taking in the cool, cool breeze.

Suddenly, I saw something,
And it was somewhat amazing.
I saw a single thread of a spider's web
That wasn't there yesterday.

My eyes followed the thin line of thread,
As it stretched across a gap,
Dangling across the empty air space
Of four feet four inches.

It went from the front house wall
To the garden's brick wall.
So I examined the spider's web there.

I saw a large circular spider's web,
As large as my outstretched hand.
Several threads formed the extended web.

I could understand the circular web,
Sticking to the side of the brick wall,
But not the other four feet four threads.

I noticed the first thread just inches away
From my best reading glasses,
Yet, there they all were, dangling in mid-air.

Horizontal threads? But how?
Was there a time of strong winds
Casting the spider from the web
To the side of my front door?

A single thread unravelling from its body?
Then some dangling along back to the web?
Then another gust of wind that forced it back?

I could not leave the sticky threads as they were.
I dismantled them, yet it's only now that I realise
I could have used my camera to get some pictures.

Are there longer spider threads out there somewhere?
Threads that stretch out over fifty-two inches long?
That's about the same distance in my bedroom
From my bedroom light bulb down to my bed!

Some spiders are those silver-coloured 'thingies'!
You know, the large, thin, gangly-legged spiders,
The ones that are really hard to see!

Just saying, that's all...

Denis Martindale.2nd of July 2026.

Here is a true account of what the Poemhunter poet Denis Martindale witnessed outside his front door this Thursday afternoon. He suddenly saw a single thread of an extended spider's web. It stretched along for fifty-two inches. Once seen, it couldn't be unseen. Even so, some spiders are very hard to see. They are outside the house. They are inside the house. Your house. My house. Good luck sleeping tonight! As Stan Lee, who created the Spider-Man comic book character, might say... 'Nuff said.'
