The Star Wish Poem by Marilyn Shepperson

The Star Wish

Black upon dark, the shadows lay
As I sat upon the shore
Of that quiet and lonely bay
A skein of geese flew above
Softly honking as they past
The very place where the sun
Had gone to rest only moments before
In every possible shade of red
The only noise from the water and breeze
Then the stars began to appear
As the sky turned from paint to velvet
So bright as to hurt the eye
And yes, I did wish upon
The one straight in front of me
In all the careless glory of my youth
Yet now, as I look back
Down the long road of the years gone by
I wonder, did I speak my wish aright
But none shall know, save that star and me
The star cannot speak and I will not.
