I watch you read those letters
In the silhouettes of dawn
The lonely tears I kissed away
Echoes of a life forlorn...
I watched you hide your smiles away
Leave me a heart so cold and still
How distant sounds our laughter, love
With all our dreams unfulfilled...
And I would give you all I had
The blood, the tears, the dust...
A weary life in solitude
The reveries of wanderlust...
I would have given you my shattered dreams
And every tethered hope
I would have given you the last breath of me
At the end of this fraying rope...
But never did you tell me you're leaving
And never did I bid goodbye
I only watched you through frosted glass
Blurred by the tears I cry...
For never did you tell me it's ending
Never did I get to ask you why...
I only felt it when you walked away
Wondering if we built castles on a lie...
Come back, I cried, but you were too far gone
And I dropped my outstretched hands
I wrote your name in the empty air
Traced it once more upon the sand...
I wrote you letters you never would read
Called out for you in dreams
But love is but a fleeting prayer
When life is falling apart at the seams...
I thought you were my midnight sky
A constellation of stars and truth
But to you I was a springtime breeze
A transient fantasy of our youth...
To me, you were the fevered dream
To you, I was a stolen glance
How swiftly fragments can fall apart
When we leave it all to chance...
And I wish, I wish a thousand times
That our dreams would all come true
I thought I'd never give my heart
To any love but you...
The stranger with the soft brown eyes
Who left me stranded on the shore
I don't wait for you to come home to me
Yet in dreams, I hold you once more...
