The Street Child Poem by Sasanka Sekhar Panda

The Street Child

Rating: 5.0

Why do you hate him?
that young urchin aged sixteen
selling evening edition of the
daily newspaper in the streets.

He is no looting Genghis Khan* on horse back!
he can't be held responsible
for the rape of his mother
in the farm house of a
millionaire farmer
and his birth, followed by
unwanted childhood.

I know sweet lady
you hate him in public
but I have seen you
caressing him in darkness
in the backyard of your mansion
after placing gently
a coin in his palm.

He never mind your hatred
he is faceless
going from darkness to darkness
despair to desperation
a true desperado indeed.

In spite of all that happened
and whatever odds going on
he can trace light in darkness
he can trace hope in hopelessness
he can trace life in death.

* Genghis Khan(1162-1227 A.D.) : A military leader from Mangolia, who established the largest land-empire covering most of Europe and Asia.

I think you have knitted the narrative rather deftly to highlight the plight of a young child on the street with a wretched past and a dark future. This is all very sad. There is a needless reference to Genghis Khan in the poem. The following lines should be edited and revised suitably- 'he can't be held responsible / for the rape of his mother....' Thanks.
