The Tree Of Democracy Poem by Dr John Celes

The Tree Of Democracy

The mammoth tree – Democracy,
Now looks like one that’s almost dead!
-Well-rooted, with a massive trunk,
And branches sturdy, sans leaves, fruits.

The leafless tree is wilting fast,
With twigs all breaking off with ease;
The bark is peeling off the trunk,
And leaves the tree, an awful sight.

The rain and sun don’t come on time;
The water-table has gone down;
The birds don’t build their nests atop;
The silhouette looks almost like ghost!

The tree is still alive till date;
Wood-cutters axe its branches small;
And alien lumber-jacks await,
To fell the tree, and sell the wood.

If people wake up at least now,
And save the tree from holocaust,
By praying God to grant His grace,
And give a newer lease to it…

‘A tree that yields not fruits just good
Will soon be cut and set ablaze!
A tree that’s good can’t yield bad fruits;
Its fruits shall prove tree’s worthiness.’

Democracy minus freedom
Of speech, and fundamental rights
Cannot prosper a nation much,
Nor take the human race forward!

Each voter has a power within
To heal the tree – Democracy;
If ’tis not done in time and grace,
The repercussions, all must reap!

Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!
