The Universe Poem by Raymond Farrell

The Universe

The universe
remembers nothing
keeps no time
books no appointments
sheds no tears
cares not
what happens
on this small speck
of space dust
calling itself Earth
Earthlings
see themselves
as important
while the universe
in its indifference
doesn't know
who these
self-aggrandizing creatures
are
if you too
are under any illusions
as to what
your place is
in the universe
go to the nearest observatory
and gaze out
on the nearest galaxy
consider its vastness
then bear in mind
the Milky Way
is a small galaxy
in proportion
to those
that lie beyond it
let the vastness
of what is
serve to purge you
of any misconceptions
you may have
about your place
in the universe.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Robert Murray Smith 22 July 2018

Raymond, I really liked this offering. There is no question about our insignificance. Yet, we are significant to ourselves because of our minds. The miracle of a fatty mainly water brain is paramount to understanding where we are relative to the universe. Both the universe and ourselves are based on coming from nothing to something. We, as the universe, will go back to nothingness.++10
