The Way Of Heavenly Virtue Poem by Micer Ambrosius

The Way Of Heavenly Virtue

' By letting go, it all gets done '
Lao Tzü
Tao Te Ching (A Book of the Right Way to Be)

o sweet friends! o my very dear ones!
let us let go of it all, let it be what it is
true spiritual power is not of this world
the outcome is not in our own hands

no end to all of our care and concern
we can't do what we would for another
nor is this a wall or an islanding of self
but our acknowledgment and limitation

though I would if I could, I cannot empower
you who choose and change what you need
so without intending it you turn the world about
upon its axis and somehow all is made new

my words in your ear or those of some other
resounding, when you recall what you decide
who can know the secret heart and soul?
is it one who departs, journeying for truth

whose kind caring goes deep down to sacrifice
not unlike a servant but like unto a holy king
whose memory spreads dark green and springing
not only sojourning but patient with as night stars

let us not pretend to one another my dear, you and I
we are alone, in company together, but for a space
there is nothing very much that I can do for you,
this is our life, divided and common to us both

I cannot deny it, nor will it be any different if you do
nor is there any way to cross the abyss between us
except for only one way which I must not say now
like you, I am small, and utterly fearless with joy

fragile and strong, I have such things within and yet
are they tiny as the soft breath of a sleeping child
each day comes upon in a manner wholly unknown
cherishing us in the providence of unbounded hope

dream on, dear heart, who is yet to be so much more
unafraid and gentle with the power of unfeignèd love
